Really, I'm the nicest, most appealing, charming, wonderful, loving person
on the face of the earth. Just ask any of those ungrateful jerks who left me!
I used the word 'labeled' instead of 'diagnosed'.. because I seriously doubt that many narcissists will ever admit something is inherently wrong with them in order to be officially 'diagnosed'. If you've ever lived with a narcissist, you know first-hand that EVERYTHING is always EVERYONE ELSE'S fault. The narcissist doesn't have any faults -- except for one: He/she was born perfect in an imperfect, undeserving world.
There is much debate over whether these personality disorders are learned or inherently genetic in nature, or even a combination of both. There's no solid proof either way, but I would like to point out that my mother has Narcissistic Personality Disorder, and my biological father (whom I never knew until I was fifteen) has Antisocial Personality Disorder. And yes, he has served jail time as well as time in mental institutions for criminal acts. I also believe with all my heart that he is quite capable of murder in order to further his own diabolical agenda, but can also be very charming, spontaneously witty, and deceptive. But that is another story altogether. Bottom line is, I've instructed my kids to shoot me if I ever show any signs of either disorder. So far, so good; therefore it cannot be absolutely genetic. Also, not being 100% genetic means that it doesn't allow either one of my parental units off the hook, as far as being held accountable for their words and deeds.
More to come...
